"In positions where the opponent's entering numbers leave you up the creek anyway, then slotting becomes more attractive."

This is the key. Much of the equity of these kinds of positions come from never making the 6 point, perhaps hitting, picking and passing, etc. and simply winning the race. When white has more checkers off, and high points open, the slot becomes more imperative since you are more likely to lose the race if you never make the 6 point, and less likely to lose the game by being hit. This is not just a DMP situation. Slotting the point and being missed can give you an efficient double or a cash, meaning that you don't actually have to worry about covering the slot.
