There are 2 reasons to bet on the river (not this hand, just in general).

1) For value. This is not the case in this hand as you are (probably) not ahead enough here with just AT high.

2) To bluff. If your hand has little to no showdown value (as this one does) you have to bet to win the pot.

Out of position, I tend to not bet mediocre hands, as the only hands that are going to call you are probably hands that beat you and will raise. Here I bet to bluff. I've taken the lead on every street, a check here just invites the button to steal with a bet. If I'm going to check/call, I'd rather bet/fold to a raise. Either way, I probably only lose one bet if I'm beat, and betting gives me fold equity, as Ace-rag here probably gives up.
