Your explanations are, as always, very lucid. I suppose that a set assumptions are essential if you are going to manage to describe backgammon games with 1 letter per play. It will take time to develop the knack of assuming the obvious part of the play and nactating the rest.

Most plays don't require assumptions. There are letters (mostly BEACON for non-doublets, see Section 4 of the tutorial) that describe playing moves in two quadrants, and other times part of the move is forced.

Where assumptions can come in handy are with complex doublets (those having three or more move subparts, though M and Y handle a couple of the key ones) and some moves played entirely within the outer or inner board, such as 10/7* here. Later, I may develop another option for handling these that both removes the assumptive element and doesn't require resorting to italics to guarantee the implementation of a bulletproof character, but so far there hasn't been a pressing need :)
