For Lucky Jim's position I count:

White

6 men around the 9 point = 3

4 men around the S1 point = 4, + the 5 pips to make the midpoint

White's total = 7.5

Black

2 * 3 = 6 for the men on the 24 point.

shift the 3 on the 20 point to the 18 (6 pips counting 1). 3 * 2 + 1 = 7

6 around the 4 point = -2.1 (shifting 2/1 to get the symmetry).

Total = 11.1, so trails by 3.2 = 20 pips

(I've found it easier, to date, to use a "." as the separator. As I cricket follower, I'm already used to interpreting the number behind the point as n of 6.)
