In Response To: US Open -- Did I Miss Something? (Bill Riles)

I agree with Bill, and I disagree with Chiva. There should be better notification of tournament changes -- whether it's format, or dates, or location. When the U.S. Open was announced for Fresno, a specific Casino was mentioned as the venue, and the word "tentative" wasn't used. If the location and dates weren't definite, that information should have been clearly stated. The change from Fresno to South San Francisco was reported on this forum by someone who happened to see it on CJC's events calendar. Chiva should have been the first one to report the change (or to report that a different venue was being considered). People sometimes schedule vacation time, or prepay hotel rooms, or pay non-refundable airline fares several months in advance of a tournament. When changes are made, directors should immediately notify the backgammon community on forums such as this one, on RGB for anyone who still uses it, even by direct email (by using the email address everyone here includes with their profile).

A geographical note: South San Francisco is not the southern part of San Francisco. It's a separate city about 10 miles from San Francisco, but just a couple of miles from San Francisco airport (SFO). San Francisco airport is located in San Bruno, California. Starting in San Francisco and going south along the Peninsula, the next city one gets to is Daly City, then South San Francisco, then San Bruno.
