NY ABT Prize concerns

I don't think anyone is suggesting that a player should be eliminated without feeding down to the next flight. But there's a scheduling issue here -- if you pay fewer places in the consolation, you have to feed those losing players into the last chance, and that will probably lengthen your playing schedule.

In the Madison tournament a few years ago, we made the mistake of paying 2/1/1 (fields were in the 24-32 range). This seems like an appropriate number of places to pay, but it means that the consolation final has to be finished before the LC field is complete. Even if you give the losing consolation finalist a bye, the LC is still effectively a round longer because of the difference in match lengths. Never again.

So, paying 3C/4C is a subtle way of easing schedule pressure in a weekend tournament.
