"Creating lots more prizes and spreading the money out such that the lowest prizes are barely more than the entry fee is lame"

I don't think it is lame at all. I rarely hedge. But do you know how many times I've made it to the money round and had my opponent ask if we can hedge slightly more than the entry fee? This is something that I know many people would like. To many people, it is very satisfying and encouraging to know that they turned a profit on the event and got onto the ABT board as well. The fact that some of us would rather play for a larger pot does not make the idea lame or unpopular.
