Making the 4-point is surely a good play, but perhaps we can do better.

I find good things often happen when you make the point 6-away from a big stack. Here I really like the looks of 10/9(3), 6/5, which not only hems in the back checkers but leaves us with a great distribution of builders to make the missing points in the prime.

Another relevant rule of thumb is that it's generally not helpful to own points that are 6-away from each other. In other words, once we make the 4-point with this roll, our 10-point is relatively useless. But I don't think this is a helpful way to look at the position, since the point of my play is to make the very useful 9-point, not simply to get off the 10-point. Certainly if black's 4 checkers were back on the ace point, we wouldn't be thinking about 10/9(3), 6/5.
