RULES FOR LEAVING ONE OR TWO MEN
1) If possible, leave one man rather than two.
2) If you must leave two men, leave them on different points.
3) If you still have a choice, move off the six point.
4) If you are already off the six point, move the man on the lower point. . .
There's a well known exception to #3: 6,3 is slightly better than 5,4 for purposes of getting off in two rolls--though both get off in one roll with 10 combinations. So with checkers on 6 and 5 and a single 2 (or two aces) to play, you play 5/3, not 6/4 as #3 specifies. If you care only about the one-roll chances, you break even; if you care about two-roll chances, 5/3 is better.
Kleinman had a simpler and witty way to cover #2 through #4: Come as close as you can to placing the checkers 2.7 pips apart.
