If you amend #2 to say "as far apart as possible," you get incorrect results, such as that 6,1 is better than 4,3 (if single 3 to play with last two checkers on 6 and 4 points), and that 6,1 is better than 5,2 (if single 4 to play with last two checkers on 6 and 5 points).

Kleinman's "closest to 2.7 pips apart" works for two checkers (if you can't come down to one checker).

Also see Jeff Ward, The Doubling Cube Vol. 1 (Volume 1 of 1, it turned out), for a good treatment of money-game checker play and doubling in small bearoffs.
