I have so many things to think about when I'm playing backgammon, that to start worrying about this would be counterproductive.

For people who play only backgammon, this is surely true. For people who are interested in a variety of gambling games involving dice, though, and who play for high enough stakes that cheating is a real problem, it might be worth the investment. I haven't trained myself on dice specifically, but I've trained myself on similar things, and after a while the recognition becomes automatic, requiring no conscious effort. For example, whenever I see a clock face with Roman numerals on it, I reflexively look to see if the "four" is IIII or IV. At this stage, it would take me considerable effort to untrain myself out of this reflex.
