The posted results for 43S-41 are

GNUbg [H X3.9] - 15k

with developing the midpoint (Hit 13-9, 6-5*) ahead of splitting the back checkers (Hit and Split 24-20, 6-5*) by a small amount. My understanding of the second roll which is now supplemented by Nack's analysis above tell me that X should be better by some amount. It makes sense to me to challenge the blot on the 15 point rather place a checker on the 9 that seems out of place. The nine blot is hit by an otherwise weak 63 and duplicates one's own 4s. I will do some additional rollouts of this one unless someone already has more than is posted on this site.

Hello David,

You made a similar though more general inquiry a couple of weeks ago, which I responded to here.

About midway down that list of second roll positions is: 43S-41 [X H8] 10k (Snowie), [H X1] 46k (Gnu). Writing it out the way I usually do in this forum, a separate line for each bot, it looks like this:

43S-41
Snowie .. [X H8] 10k
GnuBG .. [H X1] 46k

I do not yet have an XG rollout for 43S-41, though it is on queue. Also on queue is to extend my Snowie result past 10k.

Regarding the Gnu result you mentioned, [H X3.9] - 15k, that is indeed the rollout posted on this site (seed #1034300493), from April 2007. However, that rollout was extended to [H X0.6] 46k (Stick sent it to me in July 2009), which I rounded to [H X1] 46k in my listing above (and in the post a couple of weeks ago). It would be more accurate to key your research off of that.

Regarding whether it is right to play H (hit-and-down) or X (hit-and-split) in general, I recommend that you study this H vs X list carefully (along with whatever bot-response-error adjustment research you do) before drawing firm conclusions. Playing X rather than H when the split checker threatens a blot in Opp's outer board is a very important principle (as you and I have stated), but also specific numbers that hit back (typically but not always explained by obvious duplications) figure significantly into some of the choices.

Finally, if 43S-41 is your flavor of the week, by all means go into depth on that one. Clarifying, though, there are several other H vs X positions in which Gnu appears to have a bigger H bias. (The bigger the bias, the higher it is on the list.)

Cheers,

Nack
