My opponent had earlier in the match said "play" after I took a literal 5 second thought about a move. So, I was eager to finish the match, just to get it done with.

So you let his/her "gamesmanship" work? My reaction is first to take (his/her) time to point out that for most humans with more than half a brain this is a game of skill requiring use of said brain. Then I make sure I don't let the comment affect my future decisions.

OK, back to the problem at hand. :)

I'm not seeing anthing I like better than 8/4(2). Even if White's board weren't (Wisconsin) swiss cheese that would be my tendency. Were you considering the hit+lift 8/4*/2, 3/1? "I don't like that, Raymond." You'd prefer to end this match with a (cube-centered) gammon and the 4-point provides the best path to that end, IMO.
