You can see it as saying that there is not a personally harbored grudge. Then the becausee statement clarifies why. I think that is how Chuck saw it and it seems weird becasue the reason given would be a reason to hold the grudge and not to hold it.

I think it is fine though. Look as the negation as referring to all of "some grudge that I personally harbor becasue they've ever stolen anything from me personally". A reason for personally harboring the grudge is negated.

Eliminating any doubt and best of all I think would be "They have never stolen anything from me personally so this is not a personally harbored grudge."
