I experienced this in the 70's, and I used to call it "stupidclation." People would gratuitously leave blots for *ation's sake. I remember one of Magriel's NY Times columns giving Erik Seidel high marks for triplicating 2's. It wasn't the worst play, but it came near to triplication for its own sake.

I had my own bouts of stupidclation or stuplication back then. I thought I was clever to play 32: 13/10 6/4 (pretty bad) in response to opening 63: 24/18 13/10.
