Is not a lot of those missed goals, especially bad goal calls and hand balls due to a bad angle to view the play? For example if a player is attacking the goal and the ref is behind him how could he possibly be expected to see a hand ball?

That's why the referee is aided by linesmen who are supposed to stay at the sides of the field at the same position as the where the ball is. So they can see if the ball has crossed the goal line, or if a player got a ball while he was running offside.
In practice they are not always able to position themselves properly though.
