Let's look at JF3.0 evaluations. Assume the game procedes:

Blue: 25/20.

White rolls 5-4: 7/2, 7/3.

Blue rolls 64:

JF level-5 (0-ply) likes closing Blue out.

JF level-6 (1-ply) likes 20/16, 7/1*. (Closeout is second choice.)

JF level-7 (2-ply) likes 20/16, 7/1*. (Closeout is third choice.)

Why did the 1996 analysts settle for 1296 0-ply rollouts (which weren't variance reduced) when a stronger engine (level-6 = 1-ply using variance reduction) was available?
