OTB, I'd fight for the 5-point and hit 11/5*. However, there are 21 returns that lose a lot of ground in the race.

Other legitimate plays are: 8/4 6/4 makes a good inner board point. However, it's value is depreciated if White makes the anchor. It also leaves a direct shot on the eleven point - 16 hits. Actually making a point and leaving fewer shots probably makes it better than hitting.

13/9 11/9 makes a point in front of the (potential) anchor, and is safe. The combination of points 1, 2 and 3 apart means that lots of rolls will make new points in future.

24/20 13/11 locks up a point and tries for an advanced anchor of our own. Our rear chequers are already split, so the value of the re-split is reduced. It leaves White 4s to anchor, plus 1s and 3s to unstack onto the blot. I can't believe this play is best.

I now favour making the 9 point slightly over making the 4. Hitting is third.
