SS1 and SS2 are great reads, but yes, you should have a fundamental knowledge of the games they discuss in these books before you read them. They are not beginners' handbooks.

SS1 NLHE section is one of the best reads on NLHE I've personally read. It teaches a style of play that will allow you to become a +EV player.

BUT... like all systems, if you stick to it to much, players will know how you are playing and you will be exposed. You have to take the basics of a system and mix up your play as well.
