I wouldn't override a known result with intuition. I reserve intuition for situations where I don't know the technically correct play.

As far as using a suboptimal play because of opponent, this could be equitywise a good ploy. As you mention, if you have a good idea that it will put opponent on tilt. Or you think opponent will know how to respond to one type of play but not another.

There is position in Robertie's Advanced Backgammon where he teases us with the idea of playing an opening 4-1 by moving a single checker 13/8. He opines that if you are just beginning to play someone who doesn't know you, the initial first impression ("wow, what a beginner!") could pay huge dividends for the rest of the session.
