What Ian and Alexandre said. Apart from getting shots by staying back, an advantage of staying back is that it becomes more difficult to jump both checkers from the midpoint past the blot. This means some wastage. Compare the racing chances in the following two cases:

1. Blot on the 17, roll 43

2. Blot on the 14, roll 43

In the first case, you waste a lot by playing inside, in the second case, two down past the checker. This is a recurrent theme and worth remembering, not only when you can get shots, but also when you can force pip wastage.
