After just seeing it now on the DVR, this is EXACTLY what I was about to post and ask you about

Gotta be an error to kick a field goal that doesn't even put you in the lead. Of course, Caldwell, Manning and the commentators didn't even CONSIDER going for it an option (Manning immediately trotted off the field without complaint with the 3rd down run failed to get the first down.)

And then with 9:04 to go in 1st quarter of Chiefs and Ravens, the Ravens get to 4th and goal from the 1 yard line and the Nance and Simms start chortling how the Chiefs have held them and the 3rd down play was the difference between 7 and 3. (Of course, with the 'common knowledge' in the NFL, they are actually right). Excuse me, but the rules say you get FOUR downs. Chuck, didn't you say this was something like 5%?
