In the total plays extracted from 200 games, or even 1000 games, a certain amount of variance will be present. A strength measurement of 6-ply and 7-ply evals (except in end positions) might be impractical to test with current computer speeds, though the data will probably be better than nothing.

While the approaches are not mutually exclusive, it would seem more realistic to me to compare 6-ply and 7-ply evals to rollouts (at different plies) just for first and second (and maybe third) roll positions. Philip is compiling a list of the 7-ply evals, and the early game rollouts are gradually being done in various projects.
