For gnubg, I believe an individual evaluation is faster than accessing the database on disk.

I don't have numbers, but I believe gnubg gains speed in rollouts because you can truncate at the database, at least for money game rollouts.

As fro accuracy, gnubg is very good at 2-ply. See Joseph Heled's notes The GNUbg Training Program.
