In poker, a complete novice who doesn't even look at his cards still has a 50% chance of winning any given hand heads up. If they get the cards, they will win. Skill in poker predominantly affects the amount won on a hand, not the likelihood of winning a hand.

In backgammon, a complete novice may get great rolls. However, if they make donkey plays with them, they will still lose. Skill in backgammon affects both the likelihood of the win and the amount won.
