So in the spirit of sportsmanship the premature roll in that situation should always be rerolled? Is that any better than always requiring that it stand (as the rule recently was)?

It sounds like the blot couldn't be moved from the 4 point. If the roll had included a four Jason might have said "I am giving you a break this time and will let the roll stand". If that is true then Jason is effectively giving the opponent who acts improperly two chances to hit the blot. Is that what sportsmanship demands here?

I see nothing unsporting about playing by the rules here.
