Well, they did talk about poker.
True that Villa lost while outplaying BKG/Aristotle, but that was 28 years ago. 16 years ago the world had a BG bot that was World Class (on a par with the best humans). I don't think chess got there until six or eight years later, and if I remember right, with a lot more $ invested.
IMO the programming approach difference is not where the emphasis should lie. I think it's intellectual game vs. intellectual game. However, if it does matter then IMO the accomplishments in programming backgammon are more impressive. I don't keep up with the chess bots but wasn't Deep Blue actually a unique, dedicated, specialized piece of hardware? I was playing JF on a ($1000 when new) 60 MHz Pentium in 1996. Ditto TD-Gammon.
