I thought your "monsterously right" comment (even with the misspelling -- is that a J.K. Rowling?) was serious until I saw the RO result.

This is a more interesting problem than has been presented or discussed, IMO. (I can say that now after I see the RO result.) Suppose you make White's 4-point and then move White's checker on his 7-point back until the gammons for THAT position after the safe play are the same as they are here. My guess (and presumably most of yours) is that it will then be correct to play safe. I would have ripped then, too.

At least at money play (as others have noted) White figures to get a very efficient cubeturn in after the hit. That really makes this position more of an exception than it would otherwise be.
