Now 5th roll; White rolled 4-1 after your above sequence and played 13/8. (Don't think that's the right play although it could be. Splitting looks required except that then there's no comfortable four. 6/2 is major league wimpy and 13/9 tees it up for Blue. Maybe 13/8 is right. Comments anyone?)

Actually this looks like it could be possible; the style in the early 1980s was to avoid splitting at all costs, I hear, particularly if your opponent had a better board. Splitting with 24/23 and 13/9 is mandatory though.
