We can play 6/1, and be completely safe this roll. Our racing lead is big enough to pass on hitting. OTOH, we create a liability by leaving a blot on our ace, and it's not the point we need to make now (it's the three). Pick and pass from 9 leaves only 63 as a return hitter and keeps all checkers in front of the crucial three point, that's my play.
