Here's what I see going on:

The safe play, 13/8 10/6, is not actually that safe. First of all it leaves 63, 54, 44, and 66 as hitters in the outfield. That's already 6 shots!? By hitting on the ace you're only leaving 11 so the difference between safe and apparently safe has dwindled. Add on to that 22, 33 where he'll shift points and hit your other blot you're up to 8 hits.

8 hits ... let's add some more shall we? Any 4 hits lose, 41, 42, 43, 64. Any 5 hits loose, 51, 52, 53, 65. 16+8 =? I don't know, but it seems like if you're going to be hung you might as well go down fighting, and that's what 10/1* does. You're trying to buy yourself a second to flee that back checker, get him the hell out of dodge.
