Noise-canceling headphones (in addition to the earplugs already mentioned)

Tylenol and Tylenol PM

Extra pair of glasses (if he wears them)

Good dictionary and thesaurus (or dictionary/thesaurus program)

_The Elements of Style_, by Strunk and White (or some other good book on writing)
