Your analogy is interesting, but there are some decisive differences to the real world:

1) Sacrificing your privacy "voluntarily" is an illusion.

a) Most peole don't think they sacrifice, because they don't get aware of it. They either have no information or just don't care.
b) Those who recognize it and see this sacrifice as a necessity (or part of the game rules they can determine) are manipulated. They don't decide on a base of perfect information.

2) In real life those who ask _others_ for sacrificing their privacy will usually do the opposite (keeping their privacy), but they base and publish their decision on exactly the same arguments which they use for convincing others to sacrifice .

3) You assume that all players have the same influence on determining the game rules all the time. History more than once has shown the opposite in real life.
