My most natural play would have been 8/4* 3/1 and I can't understand why 8/4* 6/4 is so much better.

A general rule of thumb is that when you're bearing in against an anchor and need to leave a blot it's rarely correct to leave it on an interior point. The reason is that a blot on the 4 will be harder to lift than one on the 6, and once you lift it you'll have an ugly gap. Conversely, when you lift the six, you've cleared a rear point.
