I'm not sure what your "obvious" 54 play was but if it was anything that doesn't move one of the the back checkers I will agree that it's dead wrong.
Sticking around with both men on the 21pt doesn't give you that many more possible shots or take away that many of your opponent's good #s. By running with one you give him 11 & 22 that can hit (but those numbers weren't bad to begin with, they simply peeled off at least 3 checkers, already a good roll for your opponent) The bad aces, 61, 51, 41 are still just as bad as if you'd had two men there. The deuces you may lose out on 1 extra shot lol, hardly worth it for the negatives of the position when you don't run.
When you don't run, esp. if you make the ace point, you're risking too many gammon losses. If you make the ace you have 8 crossover to get a man off and your opponent has 12 men to bearoff. This means you're still certainly a favorite to save the gammon but it's still a real threat.
