Another thing not mentioned so far: After playing 8/7 8/3, and assuming white keeps the anchor after next roll, green will blot on 63, 64 and 65. After 7/2 7/6 green will only blot with 61 and 64. Not enough to explain the big difference between the plays, but it gives more weight to clearing the 7-point.
