I crunched some fairly typical numbers to make concrete the terrible unfairness in the current practice of awarding byes. Assuming a $400 entry fee, a 15% rake, 30 entrants and 2 byes, a first-round bye jumps your equity from $323.16 up to $575.74.

I have a more detailed breakdown, if anyone is interested.
