Thoughts on the World Championship

I have long felt that Backgammon doesn't treat it best players well. For the sake of clarity, let's say that the top 32 in the world are the "best players". What I don't like about the Monte Carlo World Championship is that it is just a tournament. Anyone can enter, anyone can win. It is a difficult event of course and very often the winner is a very strong player. Nevertheless, I would like to see the title "World Champion" be given through a process that is more likely to be won by one of the best players in the world. This would be a small, but meaningful reward to the elite of the game. No process will ever be perfect at selecting the best in Backgammon. But, I think we could do better than a long single elimination tournament open to all. I don't have a specific suggestion.
