I want to thank Paul Weaver all the posters here for their contributions to this thread. For me, as an intermediate, it has been one of the most instructive exchanges in weeks. The consise takeaways given by David Rockwell and Nack Ballard are especially informative.

David: After 31P, black has an edge in a priming game. Therefore, I will get the back checkers moving with 24-18, 10-9 hoping to create something other than prime vs prime. Facing a 53P response, I like my chances in a battle of primes and would play 61P (13-7, 8-7).

Nack: The theme, as usual: The more advanced the opponent's inside point, the weaker her prime and the better her race, and therefore the less incentive you have to split and the more willing you are to engage in a priming battle.

For the past several months, I have been looking to find the discriminating features in these kinds of positions. I was struck that the bots often condoned the split when my opponent's board was strong (after 31 or 42), but was "afraid" to split after a weaker move (eg, 53). Now I get it!
