The shorter rollouts often can statistically show with a high degree of confidence that the top roll in the rollout is in fact the best play. What they often do poorly is give absolute measures of the standing of the plays that are lower down. I'm speaking about wringing the variance out of a rollout, and that is why many of the folks doing rollouts on BGO are using a minimum 5k trial for opening rolls.

Exactly. For an early game position, an evaluation is sufficient to weed out the weakies from being the best play, if that's all one cares about. In general, I feel it's better to roll plays out at least 5k or don't bother. Otherwise, one is too often left with a misimpression about the otherwise instructive margins between plays.
