Thanks, Dmitriy and David, for your cogent remarks. I definitely outsmarted myself with this one. The bad part is that I know the general principle! In the early game, when your opponent is able to grab an advanced anchor, on the next turn you should be thinking, Split! even before the dice hit the board (a paraphrasal of a passage from Jeremy Bagais Classic Backgammon Revisited). After the opponent anchors, you cannot blitz or prime him, so the best plan is to race, or get an anchor of your own so you can play a holding game.
