H (Hit) — Definition

Plays in the H (Hit) family make a single, loose hit.

  • H is for plays that hit only once. Plays that hit two or more times are not part of the H family. K (Kill) is often an appropriate choice for plays that hit more than once.

  • H is for loose hits only. Plays that hit, and then cover the same point, are not part of the H family. Those point-on-head plays are often nactated in the P (Point) family.

In the H (Hit) family, all or part of a roll can be used to make the hit. In case only part of a roll is used to make a hit, the other part must be:

  1. a forced move,
  2. used to enter from the bar,
  3. or else played down (i.e, to or within a player’s outer board).

Note, however, in a roll of doublets, at least three of the dice must be used in making the hit.

If, in a given position, there is more than one member of the H (Hit) family, then the member plays are ranked according to the Hit/More/Six Rule. Note that when there are two plays that both hit, the Hit Convention gives priority to the one that hits on the higher point.

Example — 32U-64-n

White is Player 2

score: 0
pip: 162
Unlimited Game
Beaver
pip: 167
score: 0

Blue is Player 1
XGID=---aa-E-C---eE---c-e----B-:0:0:1:64:0:0:2:0:10
Blue to play 64

The move sequence for the postion above is 32U-64-n, where the trailing -n stands for no Jacoby Rule. There are two members in the Hit family.

  1. H (Hit) = 13/7, 8/4*
  2. h (hit) = 13/3*

Hitting on the 4pt outranks hitting on the 3pt.

The play [24/18 8/4*] cannot be nactated in the H family. It properly belongs the the X (Hit and split) family. That is because it plays its 6 on far side of the board. To be in the Hit family, the 6 must be played down (i.e, to or within the outer board).

X (Hit and split) = 24/18, 8/4*

Request for Rollouts

If you have a rollout of this position that you would like to share, please send it to me, and/or post it here.

Thanks.
