Hmm... Interesting. What I see here is 12 immediate shots off the bar after the #2 play. In reality, by staying back with 1 checker we are likely to be facing the same direct shot later when leaping out, and some minor shots on the trapped checker until then.

It seems like a next because of how close to a cube this would be under normal circumstances, so why take the immediate shot risk. But as we've seen from the cube decision that follows this, we are not actually that close to a recube here. I bet part of the hidden equity in the second best play is the ability to cube after the 9 white dances.
