The letter E refers to Each inner board, but with the extended back quadrant the 18pt checker is eligible to move.

The way I would have interpreted this previously would be E = 24/23 6/2; e = 24/23 5/1 (since these are the only moves that can legally be played in each inner board).

Right -- there was no reason for you to think otherwise. For the purposes of teaching, the current tutorial embraces simple definitions, and these tend to serve well for the first three or four moves of the game. Eventually, in later sections, I will give expanded definitions, and the back quadrant, which is the opponent's inner board, will extend back to her 11pt (for most purposes).

In the position we analyzed, E is 18/14 6/5, e = 18/14 3/2, E = 18/14 2/1, e = 24/23 6/2, and E is 24/23 6/1. (Using the fifth character in the hierarchy is rare indeed.)

Note how the destination points' combined distance from the 6pt increases with each step down the hierarchy: 9, 12, 13, 21, 22.

Nack
