Rollout: Safe or bold?

OTB, I thought that White's five-point board meant I had to play safe, and I played 5/2*/1. However, although this gains some time, the problem is that putting a checker out of play, and passing up the opportunity to make the valuable 5-point, is very costly. Blue is not that desperate yet and can afford to be more aggressive.
I don't see it that way. Blue's equity is much higher in your last example so if he is to be called desperate, it should be in the original position.
It looks like, in the original position, the anchor is more of a liability than an asset. Blue needs to lift it but that would take more time than a pick and pass and a 4 points board would provide, so he has to take a big chance now to improve the time-gaining potential of his hits. In the third position, with this difficulty cleared, the pedestrian plan becomes better.
