I'm not sure how other people study, but in addition to electronic files, I keep quadrille-ruled notebooks in which I record troublesome positions by hand.

I do something similar. I print positions out on business card stock -- just X and O diagrams -- with rollout and analysis info on the back. I stick them in an old cell phone case, which holds 50 or 60 of them. It's not as well organized as a notebook (which I've also tried), but I like being able to carry it around with me and quiz myself while I'm waiting at the doctor's office or something.
