The only way I found to get the display right (and also copy-pastable) is clumsy indeed: To display e.g. a <, write <span><</span>. Is there anything less clumsy?
Here's a translation of Nack's description:
Above the first row of your diagram html cluster, type this:
<table width="100%"> <tr><td style="width:360">
(If you want the left-right space between diagrams narrower than that, use something like 340; if you want it wider use something like 380.)
Between your diagram html clusters, add this row:
</td><td>
And below the bottom of your second diagram html cluster, type this:
</td></tr></table>
