Illegal versus impossible

I'm not sure you're grasping the point that Casper and Jason are making, which I agree with. Namely, if you're going to set down in writing exactly what the difference is between impossible and illegal, then you have to anticipate situations that might be ambiguous.
Suppose I win the opening roll with a 32 but play it 24/21 13/10. Then my opponent rolls 11 and plays 6/4(2) and puts my checker on the bar—and then we both notice my initial mistake. Illegal or impossible? Playing 24/21 13/10 on the opening roll is "impossible" in some sense. So maybe it can't be condoned? On the other hand, the resulting position after my opponent's play is "possible" in the sense that I could have won the opening roll with a 43 and played 24/20 13/10, after which my opponent could have played 6/5*/4(2). So maybe my play was merely "illegal" after all?
