Major components of the position:

  • The pipcount. As the taker you are down 20 pips. This should not be what is listed as a major component of the position here but it's where I start with every position and I'm not going to change now, it's just nice to note.
  • Men in the zone. My opponent has 10 men in the zone. This is accepted in general as the amount of men in the zone where you should be worried as the taker. The good news is that two of those checkers, while technically in the zone, are a bit removed as they only aim at one point, the 4 point.
  • Your five point is already made. This is huge! Having another home board point made means when you fight back by hitting it will sting more. Being that it's the 5pt it stings the most for your opponent.
  • Your opponent has yet to split his back checkers and your 5pt is made. A seemingly minor change such as splitting the back checkers here would turn this position from what I believe is a take in to a pass.

There are other minor things of note, such as the 4th checker on the 8pt is obviously better than it being on the midpoint or the number of covers for the opponent's blot on the ace point and the fact that it is the ace point so when it's made you have two higher points still to come in on and he's burnt that builder. These are all minor issues though. The major issues, in order of importance I believe, are made 5pt, men in the zone for your opponent, non split of the back checkers. If you make any of these major components worse, switch your 5pt to your 4pt, put another man in the zone, split your opponent's back men, the position should become a drop.
