Michael, I saw your pip-counting article at www.backgammon-biba.co.uk/PipCount.htm that you mentioned in the checker-touching thread.
I have a comment on the Block Count method. There is no need to memorize block counts. Just multiply the highest occupied point by the adjacent open point. So 10 checkers on the 1-to-5 = 5x6=30.
This also simplifies gap counts. With a pair of checkers spanning 3-7, the pip count is 7x8 - 2x3 = 50.
